The First Day of School!

Jonah and Isaac started school on the 8th...Yes I now have 3 hours 3 times a week TO MYSELF! I have not had that for 4 years. I was looking forward to it all summer, then the day came and my heart dropped. I can't be without my boys in my house or at the store. It is a lonely, vulerable feeling. They thrive at school. The learn so much and I am so happy that they are in a loving, christian environment. However, for the first two weeks every time I would leave them I had a pit in my stomach. I didn't know what to do with myself, although I had plenty to keep me busy. I counted the minutes to noon, so that I could see my precious boys again. Last week was much better and this week I feel like I am used to it. I am trying to use the time very wisely, although now I seem even more presurred to be more on top of my life. It seems about the same. Laundry is still in piles, there are still disorganized drawers and closets. However, I am enjoy the solitude. One day I picked them up and realized that I had not talked in 3 hours. I have been taking walks and been able to think to myself a lot. I believe for me, it is making me a better mom to have the break. I believe that God has put this in place for a reason and I am trusting Him.

SUPER JONAH TURNS 4!

4 years ago, we were new parents...hard to believe. I feel like I have been a mommy my entire life. I can hardly remember just being me. On September 8th, our little guy turned 4. He had been counting down the "naps" for weeks. Yes, that is how he counts time. We had a great family party on his actual birthday and then on Saturday we had a big Mario party. Complete with Mario wall decals, giant question mark boxes, coin games and Mario cake. His birthday was the best day of his life and he is already talking about being 5! NOOOOO!!!!! He is such a big kid. Sometimes we will both be looking at him and at the same time we will say " I can't believe how big he is"! He gets taller everyday and says something new every day. He is a thinker! He has amazing questions but I don't think I can give him amazing answers. Most of them are "ummm...I don't know Jonah, I don't know why God made the sky high". What an amazing kid!

10 Years and still going strong!

We had an extraordinary anniversary. You would think, knowing us that we would have planned a trip around the world to celebrate ten years because you know we LOVE to celebrate anything. However, we didn't. We layed low and it ended up being the best anniversary on record. We spent the day together talking about our life and how blessed we are to still be madly in love, to have two amazing children, to live in a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood and that I am able to stay home while Benji thrives at a wonderful job. What more could we ask for? We celebrate our lives everyday just by being with each other! On our actual anniversary, September 15, we dropped the kids at school, ate breakfast at our favorite place, Ruth's Diner, we took a little hike above the University and ooohed and awwwed at our beautiful city. We then took a little rest at a local coffee shop and then stepped into the past by visiting our reception center, 10 years to the day later. What a trip down memory lane. It had not changed a bit. I felt 20 again! It was surreal to say the least! That evening we had a few drinks at our favorite bar, Beerhive, and had our favorite meal, SUSHI!!! We ended the night by watching our wedding video which we had not seem in more than 5 years. All in all.... it was a great, great day! This last weekend we were fortunate enough to spend a few days kid free and we stayed at the new Waldorf Astoria in Park City. Luxury does not even describe it. It was amazing! We enjoyed every minute of it. We ate caviar, beef tar tar and had lots of champagne! Thank you Benji for winning employee of the quarter and allowing such an experience. We also did a few firsts, we rode the zip line and the Alpine coaster...I felt like a kid! I love you Benji!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunny days......

....chasin' the clouds away! Oh, boy do we love summer around here. We love to sit outside on nice warm evenings and listen to
music while our little one's sleep soundly in their beds. Other than that we like to ride bikes, take walks, play at the park, go hiking, rock skipping, stick finding, ice cream truck chasing... getting milk shakes, birthday celebrating, visiting the zoo, potting training, tee ball playing, soccer playing, sprinkler running, swimming, running, playing and of course BBQing. We love it all! That is what our summer consisted of. We enjoyed every moment. We decided not to take a family vacation this year because our boys are at a very difficult stage and they would never know the difference. We took full advantage of having the mountains in our back yard and explored our city fully. We visited new parks, new pools and made new friends.

Jonah loved soccer...
Happy Birthday Benji!

Don't be alarmed...we spent a lot of time here this summer and it has paid off!

Isaac did not.....

Life on toddler time!

Our life in one word is...well...slow. Stressful, anxiety ridden but slow. Everywhere we go and everything we do takes exactly 5 times as long as it did before we had children. Our boys are rambunctious, excited, crazy and a lot of the time out of control however they are slow. If ever there is a time that we all have to be out of the door at a certain time, well I give ourselves at least an extra hour to get out the door and most of the time going out the door consists of going in and out 3 or 4 times grabbing water, extra underwear, snacks or books. By the time they are buckled and in the car it is only a matter of a few seconds, to be "gently"reminded that we forgot spider man or batman. In which case I am again running into the house. Thankfully, we have a long driveway and our car is right next to the door. If we lived in apartment I might end up in the crazy ward. My boys like to stop, listen, look, touch, smell and yes sometimes taste everything that they come in to contact with. They are thoroughly fascinated by our world and everything in it. My perspective of this planet has become increasingly widened. I am now stopping to look at a single ant walk across a sidewalk or watch a plane fly across the sky. We have watched rain, wind, snow, clouds and even nothing. My boys are experts at finding the perfect stick, the perfect rock, the perfect leaf and a lot of the time they end up in my hand as a special gift to me. I treasure them with my whole heart. My boys are my life, through and through. I am graciously woken up by tiny little voices every morning. I am asked questions through out my day that make my head spin. Such as Jonah asking not what is in the sky but what is BEYOND the sky. He seriously asked what is past the moon and stars. Well, at least he is a thinker. Most of the time my head is whirling with trying to come up with creative answers to the even more creative questions. The mind of a child is a wonder to behold. Jonah has recently whined because, he wanted blue eyes, not brown. He wanted to only have one hand and he wanted to fly like a bird. And these are serious issues for him. Isaac is one of a kind. I watch him in anticipation every day with what he will do next. He is a cuddle bug and warrior. A lover AND a fighter. He is talking almost as much as Jonah so now we have double the entertainment and double the laughter. We are in awe every single day at our boys. Our little people. Or little shadows. Our little "us". Life is fundamentally and unbelievably better with these little men in our lives. Our life is a circus, our house is a pig sty, our daily routine is like a tornado but it is our life. It is what we do and it is who we are! I would not take back one organized, quiet or restful moment from our previous life for even a second. Recently, we celebrated our Ten year anniversary and as we looked back at our life together the one word that we came to at the end of the day was "full" our life is "full"! Full of wonder, awe, inspiration, love and most of all JONAH AND ISAAC!

Boston/Cape Cod July 2010

Benji had to go to Boston for work this last week...so of course I HAD to go with him! I have been wanting to go to Boston for a very long time. I LOVE US history and could not pass it up. So our wonderful family was nice enough to take the kids for a few days so that I could fly there and meet him for the weekend! We spent 4 days exploring the city and had a blast! We saw Harvard Yard, the Freedom Trail, Boston Common, Cheers, many historical sights, Paul Revere's house, Fenway Park, USS Constitution and much more. We spent the last day exploring Plymouth and Elisville, Mass and then spent a lovely afternoon in the Cape. It is breathtaking!! We enjoyed our trip so much and can't wait to return one day!

Africa!

Ok, I have felt since I returned home from Africa that I need to just sit down and right out my experience and what I am feeling. I have been putting it off because it is so involved yet I don’t yet know how to explain it. Africa in one word is magical. Not a word that I use often but that is what comes to my mind. The landscape, the people, the language, the smells. It is intoxicating. I long to return. I have an adventurous spirit. Although, I have only had small adventures compared to this one I have had them none-the-less. I began praying for an opportunity like this about 10 years ago. Although my adventures have been more spiritual and emotional than physical I am thankful for all of them. However, last November I got a very strong calling in my soul to go to Africa. I hesitated in taking the leap as I have 2 young boys at home but I knew that God would take care of the details. This is what he wanted me to do. My heart for children and spreading God’s word finally brought me to this experience. It was a huge leap of faith to sign on the dotted line and commit to leaving my family for 2 weeks and traveling across the world. I understand that others on the team had done many mission trips and even been to Swaziland before but this was new to me. I am a mother. Motherhood is my life. This contradicted that. Although there is one thing that didn’t contradict my mission, I am a mother. I understand children in a way that woman without children can’t. I live for children. I knew that I could take my heart for children and share my experience as a mother with the kids. My heart could love them in a way only a mother can. This is why God wanted me to go now, instead of my younger, child-free days. It made so much sense to me. Although, I had skeptics I stuck to it and gave 110 percent in my preparation both logistically and spiritually. I wanted God on this road with me because I clearly could not do it alone. I wanted God to use me all the ways that I was meant to be used. Looking back now I don’t feel as though I made a dent in the need that exists but I did all that I could possibly do. I stretched, sacrificed and pushed myself to the fullest extent. I just pray that I was able to touch at least one child’s heart in a way that they will never forget. Now, I have experienced the need and will be praying for these young children all the days of my life. That is where the true power lies. we made our way to the Mhkombokati care point. The drive was long and down a bumpy dirt road. My heart raced with anticipation as we approached. I had been waiting for this for so long. We pulled in and we saw a group of about 30 young children, just like my boys sitting under a tree. In the dirt, holes in their clothes and noi shoes on their feet. They were eating porridge of some kind with their hands. We got out and stood around them. My eyes swelled up with tears instantly and I had to walk away to collect myself. It was awkward, uncomfortable and I feel as though I was watching an advertisement asking for just pennies a day. It is real! No matter how much you read about it or watch it on TV, it is real. Real people, names, emotions, stories. As time went by I started getting more and more comfortable around the children. The five days spent at the care point was the most eye opening, life changing experience of my life. There are no words in the English language to describe. Soon the kids started warming up to me. There was always at least one child wanting me to hold them. They would cling to my leg or try to climb up me. I would hold one and then have to immediately have to hold another. One thing that struck me was how absolutely important a mothers touch is. These children most likely do not get any motherly touch ever. The are starved for it. One little boy that stole my heart was Mpho. A boy of about 3 years old, not much different than my little Jonah. He raised his arms to me and as I picked him up I could feel his ribs under my hands. I have never felt my child's ribs. He wrapped his legs around me and clung tightly to my neck. He nestled his little face into my neck and smelled my skin. He was fascinated with the freckles and moles on my skin and would hold my hand and look at me so closely. I would whisper to him and sing to him and he would light up. Now, this is something that I have not come to terms with yet. I was able to give this love to this little boy for a blink of an eye. A blink. It is hard for me to grasp, to explain. There were many other little children like Mpho that I encountered. Each one with different emotional and physical needs. They are desperate. However, the care point is such an absolute blessing for these children. Although they are in need at home they have a refuge. A place to come to get fed. A place to come to get discipleship and to get taught about the love of Jesus. My faith in God has grown tremendously. Some would say that seeing poverty and need in such a way would not allow for a loving God, but what I witnessed in these children was pure joy despite their need. That can only come from a loving God. He is our hope and in this world that is ALL that we need. We don’t NEED all the conveniences that we have here in America to make us happy we just need Jesus and His love. It is very simple. After 5 days with these precious little ones I had to leave. I had to leave them not knowing if I will ever return. It was heart wrenching but it did not actually hit me until I got home. I will struggle with it for a very long time.
We were also able to experience other special things in Africa. We visited a small hospital in Manzini. I cannot explain what I saw, smelled and heard while I was there. It is forever etched in my mind. We just simply prayed for the sick woman and children and it was heartwrenching. On sunday we visited a nearby church. It was very primitive but what I witnessed was true worship and thankfulness just for breathing. These people have close to nothing but still they lift their beautiful voices to praise our Lord! It was surreal! The voices were music I have never heard, breathtaking!
After our few short days at the care point we were treated to an African Safari. In all my life I never thought I would get to do this. It was everything that I had hoped for. Driving through the African plains and seeing elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys and lions in their natural habitat…there are no words. It was breathtaking! The scenery was right out of a book. I could see God’s amazing beauty every where I turned. We finally were home bound and after 33 hours of air travel I was home. The reunion with my boys was the best moment. I missed my family so much! It was so strange to be so far away from them. I am so thankful for my sweet Benji. He took such great care of our babies. It was a stretch for him. He was out of his element but he did a great job. He has been so supportive of my adventure from day one! It felt so good to come home, however it felt strange to have been so far away from home only the day before. I could think of nothing else than the precious little one’s that I left behind. What do I do now? How do I take what I know now and incorporate it into my life? Do I feel guilty for all that I have? Do I sell everything ? Do I push it aside as if it had never happened? It has been quite an adjustment. I am thankful for the new perspective on my life. I have seen God in even the most remote places in deep Africa. He is everywhere! I feel that I have something more to offer my children. I will be a better mother because of this experience. I am having trouble expressing what I am feeling. It is all so surreal. I have been exhausted physically, emotionally, spiritually and in every other way. Benji has been so sweet in accommodating my strange state of mind and exhaustion. I have been falling asleep by 9pm and he just carries me to bed. Laying in my bed was pure heaven. For 12 days I have been uncomfortable. The plane, the beds , the van, the dirt , the small little chairs at the care point. It has stretched me beyond anything I have ever experienced. I am thankful and pray that God will strengthen me to live the way he wants me to live. I am a new person today!

Easter Weekend 2010

Easter weekend was eventful! We started out with an Eggstravaganza at our church. They had an amazing children's service and then bouncy houses taboot! It was REALLY cold but the kids made it through every house. They also got lots of eggs and candy. The next day we had a nice day at home, colored eggs and then attended a Final Four party. We are not huge college B-Ball fans but it was still fun to get together with friends and let the kiddos play. On Easter we attended an AMAZING service and then we had family come over for a nice afternoon of hamburgers and birthday cake. Nick's birthday was on Easter!! We ended up with a Monday night MUSE concert! It was quite an amazing show. I was not a huge fan but seeing them live made me look at them differently. Benji has great taste in music I must say. 30th Birthday Celebration~Miami and Bahamas Cruise 2010

Turning 30 was quite an adventure! Along with our most dear friends Scott and Kami we traveled across the country to sunny Miami. Kami and I both turned 30!!! Although the weather was colder than it has been in 30 years, 53 degrees, we had the most amazing time exploring the sights and sounds of South Beach. We bundled in our warmest sweat shirts and walked around the town, shopping, eating, walking on the beach and getting pedicures in preparation for our Bahamas Cruise! We hopped a cruise ship that sailed to Nassau, Coco Cay and Key West. We had epic adventures, unstoppable laughter and most of all the BEST birthdays we could have ever asked for. Thank you Benji and Scott for the best birthday presents ever!! We love and miss you S&K.... SO much! Click Pictures!!
